Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation Board Member Dr. Sean Kern Named 2025 Young Urologist of the Year

We are proud to share that Dr. Sean Kern—urologic oncologist, educator, and testicular cancer survivor —has been named a 2025 Young Urologist of the Year by the American Urological Association (AUA). This prestigious award honors early-career urologists who demonstrate exceptional leadership and commitment to advancing the field and supporting their peers. Dr. Kern exemplifies these qualities and more.

Dr. Kern currently serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University and a practicing urologic oncologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He is the founding Director of the TESTIS (Testicular cancer Enterprise for Survivorship, Treatment, and Investigational Sciences) Program at the Murtha Cancer Center—a groundbreaking initiative that has transformed how testicular cancer is researched, treated, and tracked across the Department of Defense.

Thanks to Dr. Kern’s leadership, the TESTIS Program has become the central hub for testicular cancer care, surveillance, and survivorship for active-duty servicemembers—the population most affected by this disease. The program’s excellence has not gone unnoticed: the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation has recognized it as a Center of Excellence, and its impact continues to grow.

In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Kern is a passionate educator. He is the Program Director of the National Capital Consortium Walter Reed Urology Residency Program, the largest and oldest urology training program in the Department of Defense. He also mentors young military urologists by running the annual mock oral board exams at the Society of Government Services Urologists meeting—helping to prepare the next generation of specialists for certification success.

Dr. Kern completed his residency at Tripler Army Medical Center and his fellowship in urologic oncology through the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) at Indiana University, one of the top programs in the country.

We at the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation are proud to have Dr. Sean Kern on our board. His dedication to patient care, research, and education is helping to shape the future of testicular cancer treatment and inspire survivors around the world.

Congratulations, Dr. Kern, on this well-earned and meaningful recognition!
